Austin Willacy hosts a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of one of the Bay Area's leading community service organizations, Bread & Roses. Austin is a veteran of many Freight and Bread & Roses events as a solo performer, as a member of one of our favorite a cappella groups, the House Jacks, and as musical director of the acclaimed teen chorus 'Til Dawn. Tonight, backed by his band -- Jeff Arziejewski on drums, Kenan Malak on lead guitar and Spencer Murray on bass -- Austin performs smart, muscular original folk rock songs including tunes from his recent album, page 7. Playing tasteful guitar and singing with a soulful, versatile tenor that has been compared to Lenny Kravitz and Stevie Wonder, Austin takes his listeners on a trip through a wide range of moods and textures, from tender and alluring to edgy, raw, and driven. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Cleveland, Austin performed on the collegiate a cappella circuit while earning a degree in Psychology at Dartmouth College before moving to San Francisco. A committed supporter of traditional music, Austin is a member of the Freight's board of directors.
For 30 years, Bread & Roses has been changing lives, combating hopelessness and lifting hearts for the Bay Area's most isolated, disadvantaged and disenfranchised children, teens, adults and elders. Founded in 1974 by singer-songwriter Mimi Fariña, Bread & Roses provides free, live, quality entertainment to people who live in institutions or are otherwise isolated from society. Austin, along with scores of other performers, has performed as a volunteer for many Bread & Roses produced performances in convalescent homes, AIDS facilities, drug and alcohol facilities, special needs schools, centers for the developmentally disabled, detention facilities and homeless shelters. Tonight, Bread & Roses is launching a series of "Bread & Roses Community Nights" in collaboration with the Freight & Salvage and other venues around the Bay. Proceeds from the raffle and merchandise sold this evening will benefit Bread & Roses. Help Bread & Roses continue to set the stage for human kindness by becoming a volunteer or a donor.
