Alive!

If you ever saw them, you already know. If you missed the chance, now’s the time to find out. Alive!, according to Lady Slipper Music, “was one of the most dynamic jazz ensembles ever to hit the Women’s Music scene, and one of the most dynamic ensembles of any kind ever to hit the jazz scene.” Tonight, nearly 40 years after they started playing together, they’re reuniting at the Freight: Rhiannon on lead vocals, Carolyn Brandy on congas and other percussion, Susanne Vincenza on cello and bass, Tammy Hall on piano, and Barbara Borden on drums. The Christian Science Monitor, in a review of a 1981 New York show, calls their music “a riveting fusion of jazz, gospel, and Afro-Latin – always with a message, be it political or personal, and always with a driving energy that can switch in the wink of an eye to a subtle sotto voce.” Alive! was – and still is – a diverse collection of powerful women, all of whom composed original music for the group. ''I guess the goal with the music is to have it be a way to help people tap into the highest universal resources in themselves and bring out the good, positive qualities,” Barbara said in a past interview. If you feel like tapping in, come on down to the Freight for what should be a rousing reunion!
