Arabic Frame Drum w/ Faisal Zedan
Saturday, January 30, 1:00 - 4:30 pm (w/ half-hour break) $35.00 Taught by master percussionist Faisal Zedan, this workshop provides a broad and interactive overview of Arabic frame drumming. Using a mixture of demonstration and extensive hands-on practice, Faisal covers a variety of Arabic traditional frame drum styles, including Arabic classical/Sofi from Syria and Egypt, Arabic folk and dance from Syria and Egypt, and Arabic folk from Morocco. Both unison and polyrhythmic group playing will covered. Faisal will provide several different frame drums for students to use, but also encourages you to bring your own drum: "The style that I will teach takes any kind of frame drum and any size." Born in 1972 in Oum D'Baib, Syria, Faisal Zedan grew up impassioned with the derbakki. At the age of 15, after intensive study with a local drummer, Faisal embarked on a journey of learning a wide repertoire of Arabic classic and contemporary music. Upon arriving in California in 1992, he was invited to join the acclaimed UCLA Near East Music Ensemble, and was also a founding member of numerous other performing groups. Since 1996, he has taught at the Northern California Middle East Music Camp, among others. Here's a video of Faisal paying the tar (frame drum): You can register for classes and workshops through the Freight box office in person with cash, check, or credit card.
