This workshop explores basic "swing/jazz" mandolin chords, chord comps or rhythm on the mandolin, and some great "must-know" Swing & Gypsy Swing standards! You'll learn a variety of moveable, closed position chords useful in all styles of swing and jazz. We'll get you jammin'! We'll also work on adding that swing feel into our rhythm or "comp."

All levels welcome but you should be familiar with major, minor, and seventh chords on the mandolin and be able to read chord diagrams. We'll provide sheets with songs and chords, excerpts from Dix's latest books and DVDs on the subject. The most important pre-requisite is an interest in playing Swing and Gypsy Swing! (Depending upon the skill levels of attendees, we may also explore more advanced subjects like chord substitutions, transposing chords and melodies to different keys, and playing in octaves.)

Dix Bruce is a musician and writer from the San Francisco Bay Area. He performs and records with a variety of groups from a duo with guitarist Jim Nunally to a 10-piece big band, The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. Dix has taught mandolin, guitar, music theory, repertoire, among other musical subjects at some of the country's finest music camps and has taught music in the Bay Area for over 35 years. He has authored over 50 music instruction books, CDs, and DVDs for Mel Bay Publications and Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop. His latest include four book/CD sets, two each for mandolin and guitar, entitled "Gypsy Swing & Hot Club Rhythm, Vol I & II". .
