Clawhammer Banjo Intermediate Repertoire
Tuesdays, 7:45-9:00 pm, beginning September 11
Utilizing different tunings and syncopations, drop thumb, rolls, etc, this class will move through acquiring repertoire by looking at specific fiddle players, and their signature tunes, or versions of common tunes. Emphasis on hearing what the fiddle is playing and translating left-hand melodies and right-hand syncopations to develop your own style.
*Deering Good Tyme Banjos are available for rent for the session, or sale at a discounted price. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in renting or purchasing a banjo.
Evie Ladin is a banjo player, step-dancer, singer, and songwriter with a lifetime of experience in traditional American cultural arts. She grew up in a trad folk scene up and down the Eastern Seaboard of the US, travels the world, and calls the rich arts scene in Oakland, California home. With The Stairwell Sisters, all-gal old-time teardown, Evie performs traditional and original material on clawhammer banjo, vocals, clogging and hambone. With Keith Terry & Crosspulse, she performs rhythm-based multi-cultural music & dance works, bringing her Appalachian skills to collaborations with a variety of other cultural arts, including other styles with roots in the African Diaspora. Evie calls rowdy community square dances, performs for extremely diverse populations of school-kids, and tears it up at clubs and festivals.
Jordan Ruyle is a banjo player, old time musician and square dance caller living in Oakland, CA. He 'discovered' the banjo in the early 1990s and has never looked back. His love of old-time music led him to teaching and he has since worked with hundreds of students privately, in workshops, and on teaching staff at festivals. He balances his teaching with his active performance schedule. Currently playing with local old-time bands the Pork Pies and the Schoolhouse Stringband, Jordan was also a founding member of the Mercury Dimes. Jordan is also a southern square dance caller and regularly organizes and calls dances locally. He is happy to be teaching banjo at the Freight this summer!
