In this afternoon event coinciding with similar events throughout the U.S., Berkeley City officials join musicians, poets, authors, and the public in a special ceremony to remember the Holocaust.
Cantor Sharon Bernstein opens the event with bassist Stuart Brotman and spoken word remembrances from poet Robert Alter, Susan Greenwald, and Baruch Nutovic, a candle lighting ceremony for Holocaust survivors, and speeches by Kriss Worthington and other members of the Berkeley City Council.
Fondly remembered by folks who saw them perform back in the day, Any Old Time String Band was one of the most popular old-time bands in California during the 1970s and '80s. Playing an adventurous mixture of traditional fiddle tunes, old blues, string band songs, Cajun music, popular tunes of the 1920s and '30s, and even a bit of string band jazz, the pioneering all-woman band combines contagious high spirits with top-notch musicianship.
