In the heart of the creative renaissance taking shape in Oakland, California, the T Sisters are making a name for themselves as one of the West Coast’s foremost indie-Americana acts. The sisters tap into a tradition that hails from folk’s deepest roots: sibling song-making and harmonizing. As with bands like The Andrews Sisters, The Roches and The Everly Brothers, a transformative resonance rings out when the three sisters join their voices together. A follow-up to their 2014 debut release, Kindred Lines (produced by celebrated bluegrass musician Laurie Lewis), the T Sisters’ self-titled sophomore studio album features 10 timeless songs that, while inspired by the American folk tradition, also embody a fresh and contemporary sound with inflections of pop, R&B/soul and country.

Cascada de FloresCascada de Flores specializes in achingly beautiful songs from Latin America’s golden age. At the heart of the music is the gorgeous voice of Arwen Lawrence and the expressive guitar of Jorge Liceaga. Together they evoke a wonderfully lush, intimate atmosphere. The San Francisco Chronicle has called their music “delightfully upbeat, mournful, whimsical, and wistful.” In their fifth album ¡Live!, Cascada de Flores reimagines tradition through individual expression and musical communication. With the essence, perhaps, of the jazz musicians that they so admire, the group swims the waters (some uncharted) that lap the shores of Mexico, the Spanish Caribbean and even the north with its big bands and ballads.

Misner & SmithMisner & Smith – that’s Sam Misner and Megan Smith – are long-time Freight favorites. Sam plays guitar, Megan plays mandolin and upright bass, and when the two of them sing together, their blended voices ring with commitment and vitality. Maverick Magazine has praised their “superb harmonies” and the website Hicks with Sticks has called them “a Bay Area treasure to be shared . . . with a touch for taking simple ideas and infusing them with unexpected meaning, metaphor, and imagery.” Their latest album, Seven Hour Storm, is a collection of 11 originals that show off their sterling musicianship, poetic songwriting, and gorgeous harmony vocals.

Austin Willacy is a veteran member of The House Jacks with whom he has produced 10 full-length albums and completed multiple world tours. For the past 19 years, Austin has directed ‘Til Dawn, Youth in Arts’ award-winning teen a cappella group that empowers youth to find their voices in many ways. Austin is also an award-winning singer/songwriter with 4 CD’s and 2 EP’s to his name. His music is soulful and raucous, tender and comic. Austin’s music has been featured on The Sing Off, Road Rules, an Australian ad campaign and three feature film soundtracks. He’s appeared in Rolling Stone and has performed with icons such as Bonnie Raitt and up and coming artists like Jem, Vienna Teng, Rachael Yamagata and Amos Lee.

He’s an organizer and facilitator for YES! and a former board member for Rainforest Action Network and the Freight & Salvage. He even has a side career in soundalike singing voiceovers for games including Guitar Hero and Karaoke Revolution, Austin is a renaissance man. But, who cares about all that? Because what really matters is what Bonnie Raitt told him: “You can really F*ckin’ sing!”

Coming from the coastal hills of Petaluma, California, Ismay represents the creative work of artist and horseback adventurer Avery Hellman. Drawing from bluegrass and old-time music as well as those who live in and write about the West, Ismay emanates from this cultural history with songs of the New American West.
