June & Jean MillingtonTonight June and Jean Millington, the original "Godmothers of Chick Rock," dish out the gritty, sassy, accomplished goods in celebration of the release of their new album Play Like a Girl. The Sacramento-raised, Phillipine-American sisters, started their first all-girl band in the ‘60s and by the end of the decade had a major label deal with their band Fanny. They toured from 1970 to 1975, wrote and arranged their own songs, released five albums, and had two international hit singles ("Charity Ball" "Butter Boy"). David Bowie gushed in Rolling Stone, "They were one of the finest rock bands of their time . . . They were extraordinary." June and Jean Millington continued to record and release albums together after Fanny disbanded, most recently in the group Slammin' Babes. June, who Guitar Player magazine called "the hottest female guitar player in the industry" has a long career producing albums as well, with credits including those by Holly Near, Mary Watkins, Cris Williamson, Bitch and Animal, John Simon, Diane Lincoln, and Joel Zoss.

In 1987, June co-founded the non-profit Institute for the Musical Arts as a means of nurturing a new generation of female musicians. Play Like a Girl is a direct result of June & Jean's experiences since starting an all-girl band themselves-and helping other girls learn music today, mentoring, supporting, teaching, and helping them organize themselves in the world of music. The third member of tonight's band is Jean's son Lee Madeloni on drums. Lee, who also appears on Play Like a Girl, picked up his first album credit when he was fourteen, playing drums on the song "Welcome" (to the Real World) on June and Jean's Melting Pot.
