Marty StuartIf you were lucky enough to catch Marty Stuart & The Fabulous Superlatives when they came to the Freight last year, you’re already buying tickets and telling your friends to do the same. Marty is a country music marvel. Born in Philadelphia, Mississippi, a musical wonder boy, he toured with Lester Flatt as a teenager in the 1970s, spent six years in Johnny Cash’s band in the 1980s, and went on to become a Grand Ole Opry star, winning five Grammy awards, as well as awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association and the Americana Music Association. “Marty Stuart lives and breathes country music,” says Country Standard Time. He “simply makes great country music the old fashion way, and for that we have a lot be thankful for, once again, from country's foremost renaissance man.” In the liner notes to his 2012 album, Nashville, Volume 1: Tear the Woodpile Down, Marty writes, “Today the most outlaw thing you can possibly do in Nashville, Tennessee, is play country music.” He’s not only an outlaw, he’s also a country music archivist, Southern culture historian, photographer, TV show host, country music fan, and charismatic force of nature!

His latest album, Ghost Train (The Studio B Sessions), is a tribute to the spirit of classic country. "When country music is doing its job,” Marty says, “it reports on the good, bad, and indifferent of our human condition.” This new album updates that report. “I referred to the original blueprint of country music for the subject matter. I wrote about love, marriage, heartaches, trains, home, work – or the lack thereof – vagrancy, the law, jail, rivers, death, sin, redemption, drinking, and goodhearted women.” His aptly named band, The Fabulous Superlatives, features three superlatively fabulous musicians, Harry Stinson on drums, Paul Martin on bass, and Kenny Vaughan on guitar. Marty, says musicologist Peter North, “has without question evolved into one of the most important roots musicians and visionaries in America.” He’s not just important – he’s irresistibly entertaining and flat out great!

“Aubrie Sellers is a youngster worth keeping an eye out for,” says, and the country mega-star Lee Ann Womack says, “Aubrey is a really great singer.” Full disclosure: Lee Ann is Aubrie’s mother, so she may be a wee bit biased, but another big country star, Miranda Lambert, invited Aubrey to sing on her newest album, Platinum, and Aubriehas a great cover of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic, “I Put a Spell on You,” on YouTube, so she’s more than capable of proving herself on her own.
