This workshop introduces 'raga', the most significant melodic principle in Indian classical music. Led by Alam Khan, instructor at the Ali Akbar College of Music and son of the late Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, and Gautam Tejas Ganeshan, vocalist and director of the Sangati Center, the workshop has two components - instrumental and vocal. All attendees should expect to participate in basic vocal exercises, and proficient instrumentalists of any genre are invited to bring their instruments for direct instruction. Instructors will also introduce and demonstrate concepts in melodic improvisation.

*The workshop is for vocal and instrumental students who want to develop their knowledge of Indian classical music. People at any level of musicianship, including complete beginners, can attend with no prior knowledge and benefit from the gradual introduction and vocal exercises teaching the overall structure of a raga.

Alam Khan, the son of the great Ali Akbar Khan, began studying with his father when he was seven and performed throughout the world with the late maestro. In the past decade, Alam has established himself as a solo artist on the sarode, a resonant, fretless stringed instrument used mainly in northern Indian classical music. He received a prestigious Individual Artist's Grant from the Marin Arts Council in 2003. Alam continues to carry on his family legacy and the music of the Maihar school of Hindustani music, performing and teaching at the Ali Akbar College of Music in California.

Vocalist Gautam Tejas Ganeshan is known for exploring the ecstatic edge of contemporary Indian classical music. He has guest-lectured on Carnatic (South Indian classical) music for the Music of India courses at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz, and has conducted workshops on singing and the aesthetics of Indian classical music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and at the Asian Art Museum (SF). He is the founder and director of the Sangati Community Center for South Asian Music in san Francisco.
