Mike FarrisFresh from winning the 2015 Grammy for Best Roots Gospel Album, Mike Farris comes to Berkeley with his powerhouse band, the Roseland Rhythm Revue, to play his unique brand of original and traditional roots music, blending gospel and blues, rock and funk, in a heart-melting brew that lifts the spirits and stirs the soul. “My music has always been first and foremost for the downtrodden,” Mike says. “Even when it's upbeat and inspiring, there's always been an element of pain, because truth be told, we're all flawed. Not everybody knows it, but we all are.” His peers in the music business are singing his praises. Mike “has enough heart, soul, and power to light up a city,” says Buddy Miller. Mike played with Buddy on Patty Griffin’s Grammy-winning album, Downtown Church. “Mike takes people who are hurting, who are broken, who think they are alone, and through just the sound of his voice he lets them know that they're not,” says Mary Gauthier. “That's magic.” Mike plays a rousing version of Mary’s song “Mercy Now” on his sixth and latest album, Shine for All the People.

A Tennessee native, Mike won an Americana Music Award for New/Emerging Artist in 2008. He played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a concert honoring Aretha Franklin and at an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame Special with Kenny Wayne Shepherd & Double Trouble. Despite his many musical successes, he doesn’t shy away from talking about struggle and loss in his songs. "I've discovered that falling is a divine thing," he says. "It's part and parcel of being human. The important thing is to keep the faith and keep moving on. Daring to be courageous enough to share our deepest burdens with each other is the greatest gift we can give." Enjoy the gift tonight at the Freight!
