Ramana Vieira, who completed a successful series of show in Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and was recently at the International Portuguese Music Awards walking the red carpet in New Bedford, Ma. due to her third nomination, is returning to her home turf….and she’s bringing along some friends. For her show on June 29th, Vieira will be joined by the duo Fatima Santos and Jose Luis Iglesias.

Santos, a native of Albergaria-A-Velha in northern Portugal who is now based in the NYC area, is one of the few female performers of Coimbra fado. Attracted by the operatic vocal technique that defines the music of that specific area, and inspired by great composers such as José Afonso and Luiz Goes, Santos is the recipient of two IPMA (International Portuguese Music Awards) for Best World Music and Song of the Year (2014). Her constant collaborator Iglesias will perform on the guitarra, the Portuguese guitar with 12 steel strings.

Born in Coimbra, Portugal, José Luis Iglésias began his activity as a musician participating in Coimbra Fado ensembles, working with such notable composers and performers as José Afonso, Fausto, Vitorino, Pedro Barroso, and Teresa Silva Carvalho. Mr. Iglésias studied music at Rutgers University and is a member of the faculty at Caldwell University. Committed to the musical education of youth, Mr. Iglésias has founded a number of music schools in New York and New Jersey, where he is an active teacher. José Luis Iglésias also enjoys a career as a composer, arranger and artistic director.

Vieira, who recently released a new album, Fado da Vida, has been described by Mundo Portugues newspaper as the “New Voice of Portuguese World Music.” She has headlined the world's largest Portuguese festival, the New Bedford Portuguese Feast in Massachusetts, and performed at the 2010 Encontro Festival in Macau. One of her original songs, “Unido Para Amar,” was played during the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Vieira was also chosen to sing for the 50th Grammy Awards special MusiCares benefit honoring Aretha Franklin, and was invited by United States Congressman Jim Costa to perform for the president of the Azores, alongside the internationally acclaimed guitarrista and artist Chico Avila. The opening track of her new album, “Cabo Verde,” was nominated as Best World Music Song at the 2015 International Portuguese Music Awards and 2016 for Best Fado. At the upcoming Bay Area show, the trio will be supported by a core group of musicians who often perform with Vieira: Patrick Fahey on mandolin, Steve Nelson on percussion, Alberto Ramirez on acoustic bass, and Ela Polak on violin.
