Slack Key Guitar Workshop w/ Cindy Combs & Stephen Inglis
Friday, August 13, 6:30-8:30 pm
Cindy Combs discovered an affinity for stringed things in 1963 on arrival in Hawaii when she began playing the ukulele at the age of ten. At eighteen, she saw an ad in the newspaper for slack key guitar lessons with Keola Beamer, took the six week course, and has been a devotee of the music ever since. She has a distinctive style of playing slack key that includes influences of Gabby Pahinui, Atta Isaacs, Keola Beamer, Sonny Chillingworth, and others. Cindy has taught music privately and given slack key workshops at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Dusty Strings in Seattle, the Kapalakiko Band headquarters in Oakland, and at the Beamer family's Aloha Music Camp. Stephen Inglis is recognized as one of the most diverse musical artists in Hawaii today. Although he's equally at home on the acoustic and electric guitar, the art of K? H?'alu--Hawaiian slack key guitar--has been at the heart of Stephen's music in recent years. With a deep love for many kinds of music, Stephen's songwriting blends tradition with innovation in a diverse and effective tapestry. Stephen has also performed and toured with artists such as slack key masters Cindy Combs, Ozzie Kotani, Dennis Kamakahi, and Makana, and Hawaiian music legends The Makaha Sons.
