Expand your guitar playing horizons with the expertise of 'Slack Key Lady' Cindy Combs, plus slack key innovator Stephen Inglis. They'll be exploring the 'Taro Patch' and G6th tunings, picking patterns and chords, along with slides, mutes, ornaments, and techniques to improve your overall guitar style. You'll also be introduced to some original music designed to get you moving up and down the fretboard like surfing up and down a wave. You will test the waters in a circle jam and get some individual attention with any 'pilikia' (problem). Some playing experience and ability to read TAB suggested but not necessary to begin or continue your guitaring journey with the Hawaiian style of Slack Key.

Cindy Combs discovered an affinity for stringed things in 1963 on arrival in Hawaii when she began playing the ukulele at the age of ten. At eighteen, she saw an ad in the newspaper for slack key guitar lessons with Keola Beamer, took the six week course, and has been a devotee of the music ever since. She has a distinctive style of playing slack key that includes influences of Gabby Pahinui, Atta Isaacs, Keola Beamer, Sonny Chillingworth, and others. Cindy has taught music privately and given slack key workshops at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Dusty Strings in Seattle, the Kapalakiko Band headquarters in Oakland, and at the Beamer family's Aloha Music Camp.

Stephen Inglis is recognized as one of the most diverse musical artists in Hawaii today. Although he's equally at home on the acoustic and electric guitar, the art of K? H?'alu--Hawaiian slack key guitar--has been at the heart of Stephen's music in recent years. With a deep love for many kinds of music, Stephen's songwriting blends tradition with innovation in a diverse and effective tapestry. Stephen has also performed and toured with artists such as slack key masters Cindy Combs, Ozzie Kotani, Dennis Kamakahi, and Makana, and Hawaiian music legends The Makaha Sons.
