Born in 1978 in Rudrapatna in the Hassan district of Karnataka, Shashank learned to play bamboo flute from his father. He has recorded more than 55 albums, and is featured as a special guest on John McLaughlin’s Floating Point, Grammy-nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2009. In concert, he typically includes an original Ragam Tanam Pallavi as a central piece – if you aren’t familiar with this form of music, please listen to the clip on the Freight website – and he plays a variety of flutes to cover octaves that are not supported by the traditional Carnatic flute. With Purbayan Chatterjee on sitar, Anwar Khan Manganyar on vocal, Firoze Khan Manganyar on dholak, and Patri Satish Kumar on mridangam and khanjira, tonight’s performance promises to put you in touch with the spirit of Krishna.
